Precision Rifle Barrels

Overview

What goes into a Rachel Precision barrel?

Rachel Precision chambers match-grade barrels from Brux, CRB, Krieger, Bartlein, Benchmark and Muller Works in Canton, Mississippi. Accuracy comes from the barrel and the chamber working together. Here’s how we build one, from the blank to the bedding.

Barrel blank selection

How do we choose a barrel blank?

Every custom rifle starts with the right barrel blank, from makers known for consistent, accurate barrels. Blanks are typically high-grade stainless steel, for durability, heat resistance and barrel life. We help you pick the caliber, length and contour for your goals, from long-range competition to hunting.

Rifling and twist

What does rifling do?

Rifling is the set of spiral grooves inside the barrel that spin the bullet as it exits. That spin keeps the bullet stable on its path, and how the rifling is made has a big effect on accuracy.

We order each blank in the twist rate that suits your caliber and bullet. A matched twist keeps the bullet stable, especially at long range. The 6mm barrels in our shop are 1:7.5 twist; for .22LR, 1:16 is the standard.

Button rifling or cut rifling?

We chamber barrels made by both of the most respected rifling methods. The CRB .25-caliber blank in our shop is single-point cut, and our Bartlein barrels come in 4-groove and 5R rifling.

Chambering

How is a chamber cut?

The chamber is where the cartridge sits when it’s fired, so it directly affects accuracy, reliability and performance. Even a small error in its dimensions can cause inconsistent pressure, poor accuracy or a dangerous malfunction.

We cut each chamber with high-precision reamers sized to your cartridge. A snug, precise fit keeps pressure consistent from shot to shot, which shows up as more consistent velocity and tighter groups.

True Bore Alignment

What is True Bore Alignment?

Our True Bore Alignment system centers the chamber on the exact centerline of the bore, removing any offset or misalignment. With the bore and chamber concentric:

  • The bullet travels straight from the case into the rifling.
  • Shot placement stays consistent.
  • Pressure stays even inside the chamber, which cuts down on wear.

Crowning

Why does the crown matter?

The crown is the end of the barrel, where the bullet exits, and any flaw there can throw off its flight. We cut crowns so gas leaves evenly around the bullet, keeping its path straight and protecting the accuracy you paid for in the barrel and chamber.

Bedding

What does glass bedding do?

To finish, we glass bed the action to the stock. Bedding removes any movement between them, so the action sits in exactly the same place every time, even under recoil, and the barrel stays free-floated.

Back-flush coolant

What sets our chambering apart?

Every turning center in our shop has a back-flush coolant system. While the chamber is cut, coolant flushes through it and carries chips out, so nothing scores the surfaces that matter most and the cartridge gets a clean, stress-free fit. It also makes our tools last longer.

“I'm probably easily 20 barrels in with all the variants we have tried, and even the worst barrel was capable of winning any PRS match out there.”
Jeff Guerry Team USA, 2026 IPRF World Championship
“Every barrel I have received has been a hammer. The peace of mind that his quality of work brings is awesome.”

Who makes the barrels you chamber?

The barrel makers do the rifling. We use Brux, CRB, Krieger, Bartlein, Benchmark and Muller Works. We choose the blank with you, then do the machine work that decides how it shoots: chambering with True Bore Alignment, muzzle threading and crowning. Our shop stocks 6mm barrels from Brux, Krieger, Bartlein and Benchmark in 1:7.5 twist, plus CRB blanks.

Is cut rifling better than button rifling?

Both make excellent match barrels, and we chamber both. Button rifling forms the grooves by pushing a hardened button through the bore; it’s a faster process with a smooth, uniform finish. Cut rifling cuts the grooves one pass at a time and offers more flexibility in twist rate. Tell us your caliber and your goals, and we’ll recommend a blank.

What is headspace, and how do you set it?

Headspace is the distance from the bolt face to the point in the chamber that stops the cartridge. On a bottlenecked case like 6.5 Creedmoor, that point is on the shoulder. Too much or too little affects pressure, accuracy and safety. We set headspace for the cartridge you’ll shoot.

Why does back-flush coolant matter when chambering?

A reamer makes chips as it cuts a chamber. If they stay in the chamber, they can score the walls you’re trying to cut perfectly. Every turning center in our shop flushes coolant through the chamber while it’s cut and carries those chips out. That gives you cleaner chamber walls, a better fit for the cartridge and longer tool life.

How much does a barrel cost?
