It’s hard to believe it’s only been two years since sixteen-year-old Dakota Wright first picked up a .22LR. Within days, she entered her first match, and now, she’s headed to Italy to represent the United States on the Ladies Precision Rifle Team.
Dakota’s marksmanship journey began with pistol shooting, but she soon craved something more dynamic. Once she discovered rimfire precision rifle matches, she was hooked. Over the past two years, she has committed to her passion, regularly competing in two to three matches each weekend—amounting to an impressive 145 matches to date.
Her father played a pivotal role in igniting her interest, often competing alongside her. “One of the best parts of shooting is being able to spend time with my dad. Plus, I get to travel and meet incredible people,” Dakota shared.
Dakota speaks warmly of the camaraderie she’s found in the shooting community. “I’m so grateful to be part of this brotherhood. It’s full of amazing people,” she explained. “Shooting isn’t just about pulling the trigger. It’s a mix of 25% rifle and ammo, 20% positioning, 50% mental strength, and that final 5% of ‘other’ factors.” This intricate balance, she notes, keeps her motivated and constantly learning.
Dakota urges new shooters to ask questions and embrace the learning curve. “It takes time to understand the discipline, but it’s worth it. Stick with it, and the fun will follow.”
Her own achievements speak volumes. In just two years, Dakota has competed in the PRS national finals twice, made her mark at the 2023 NRL championship, and earned a place on Team USA. With the support of key sponsors like Rachel Precision, Kahles Optics, MDT, and Fat Boy Tripod, she’s equipped with top-tier gear. Dakota relies on a RimX action paired with a Shilen barrel, set into an MDT ACC chassis with a Kahles 525i scope and Erik Cortina Tuner. Her precision setup is complemented by a Fat Boy Tripod with SideChick, Kestrel, LabRadar, Vortex rangefinder, and Armageddon Gear accessories. Dakota’s meticulous preparation extends to carrying chamber flags, tools, and extra parts—ready for any challenge.
With high school still on her path, Dakota’s ambitions are clear. She hopes to join the military, ideally the Army Marksmanship Unit, while pursuing a college education in Psychology and Sociology.
Backed by Rachel Precision and her dedication to excellence, Dakota Wright is a rising star with a bright future in competitive shooting.
